Five Elements.
Understand the relationship.

Explore the traditional generating and controlling cycles. This is a new public lesson template, awaiting alignment with the original teaching assets.

Traditional framework

Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood.
Traditional theory diagram · generating cycle only. The interactive exercise below also explores the controlling cycle.

01 / Learning goals

What you will explore.

Identify the five categories and trace two traditional relationship cycles. The exercise introduces a conceptual system; it does not establish a physical cause or predict an outcome.

02 / Explore

Choose an element.

Traditional generating relationship

Wood → Fire

In the traditional generating cycle, Wood generates Fire.

Generating: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood.
Controlling: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood.

03 / Observe & reflect

From a model to a question.

Concept

The Five Elements are traditional categories used to discuss relationships and change. The generating and controlling cycles are distinct patterns within this framework.

Application exercise

Before interpreting a home through these categories, record the visible conditions: materials, light, access, surroundings and how the space is used. Keep that observation separate from the traditional interpretation.

04 / Check your understanding

Which element does Water generate?

Select one answer.
